In one of his most recurring dreams, he is on a dusty country road in a pair of shorts and a sleeveless T-shirt and well-cushioned running shoes, his legs taking long, smooth strides, the wind rushing by refreshingly, the kilometers passing by swiftly. He runs for what seems like forever, his lungs not at all tired, his heart pumping strongly without any undue demands on its regular pulsating beats.
You could say it is not an unusual dream for someone who has been on asthmatic medication for most of his life, for someone who is liable to experience distressful wheezing in his airways when doing any sort of strenuous physical activity. Yet, despite this major hurdle to an active lifestyle, he managed to get himself selected into the college football team, and later on, even earned a black belt in a form of martial art.
You could not say that he was a really healthy person, but rather, a fit individual. There’s a difference between fitness and good health, although each complements the other. One can achieve a high level of fitness through dedication and determination, but as far as good health is concerned, it is not totally in one’s hand, with a plethora of diseases out there that can afflict anybody. Nevertheless, being fit ensures that you can cope better with whatever malady you may be unfortunate enough to acquire.
Now, talking about fitness exclusively, there are any number of fitness centers in Kathmandu offering any number of methods to lose weight and tone up or build muscles. And, of course, there are quite a number of sporting activities that one can pursue regularly in order to remain in fine fiddle. Keeping fit is not really as difficult as some may make you think, all you got to do is to realize that without fitness, you really cannot have a fulfilling life.
Now, here is something worth ruminating on: what is your concept of the ideal physique? Hope it’s up-to-date with the times, and not stuck on the concepts doing the rounds some decades ago, some of which were quite harmful to health, actually. Serious maladies like anorexia and bulimia were two words doing the circuit when girls started believing that being skinny was the way to go. Hopefully, it’s a fad that has been buried deep. Today, weight gain is the major problem—due to many reasons, sedentary lifestyle and fast food being two—and people are really struggling to shed the excess baggage they’re carrying around with them.
And, in many cases, it’s a lot of excess baggage, believe me. So much so, that people are resorting to all kinds of options in a desperate bid to be among the alive, as it were. Words like liposuction and bariatric surgery are the kind of words doing the rounds today. All that fat accumulated through the years is now a burden that has been defined as a disease, no less. Meaning, the fault is not completely yours alone; you can blame it on the genes, for instance, or to parents who fed you too much of the fatty stuff, thus increasing the number of your fat cells that in adulthood play their part in making you fat more easily than others.
Well, all this has made fitness a more challenging word, that’s for sure. So, I guess we should be thankful that the number of fitness centers continues to grow by leaps and bounds. I’m waiting for one to open up near my home. You see, all that excess baggage I’m carrying around with me has made me too lazy to go to one some distance away.
