By Esparsh Sarawagi

Kathmandu is, no doubt, getting flooded with new restaurants, all of them having their own specialty. When it comes to deciding the best food places in Kathmandu, we cannot trust anyone else except the professionals. To help you choose the best of places in town, Fr!day caught up with five food bloggers who give us their recommendations on their favorite restaurant, food market, or even just a pop-up shop around town.

Nepal.Food

Why and when did you start food blogging?

I officially started six months back as Nepal.Food. Back then, it was Sidharth.Food, because it was just my personal food diary, but when people started noticing the page, I later added “Nepal” to reach out to all. The reason behind blogging is something that just happened. As mentioned earlier, my personal page caught overwhelming attention, and it fueled a foodie like me, whose genes was that of a chef dad.

What is it that you most love about blogging?

The pleasure of being someone who led many people to the places that otherwise would have remained unknown, and the stories and memories they created in those places that make their way to my inbox and comment sections gives me an instant big smile and a sense of satisfaction.

Your recommendation for the best places to have food?

Some of my favorites currently that I recommend are: Jimbu Thakali at Naxal, Palpasa Momola at Thamel, New NPP at Basantapur, Pho 99 at Boudha , Bodhi Books and Bakes at Chappalkarkhana, and Deli Akuj at Gairidhara.

What are the best foods in Kathmandu, and where are they found?

Hands down, the best foods in Kathmandu are definitely local foods. From RumPum chatpatey at Baneshwor to alu nimki at Nakhipot, Kathmandu is rich with such small eatery places. Some of the best foods are local momo at Everest and Narayan Dai ko momo; thick homemade noodles at Boudha; alu roti for breakfast at Swoyambhu, masyaura alu at Indrachowk, samosa at Tip Top, water momo in Chabahil, poleko anda at Bypass, trout fish at Kakani, and the list goes on.

Mr. Foodie_Nepal

Mr.Foodie_Nepal is a 25 year old guy who is a big food enthusiast. He is coming with big projects with strong messages and trying to bring some changes in kitchen practices in restaurants and hotel businesses in Nepal. He is soon coming up with “My Introduction Video.”

Why and when did you start food blogging?

Officially, I started this two years ago. It was not planned, and it just happened, as I have always been a bigtime foodie and loved exploring different restaurants in Kathmandu. In the past, I had a very bad experience in a restaurant, where I suffered from food-poisoning, though that restaurant was very appealing. It hit me so hard inside, and I thought people deserve to know about it. That’s how my food blogging journey basically started.

What is it that you most love about blogging?

The answer is “food, food, and food”. I love exploring new places. With new places comes new excitement and history.

Your recommendation for the best places to have food?

It’s hands down New Road, Basantapur, and Thamel. The variations of food available in these areas, from a decent restaurant to local eateries, street foods to fine dining, historic places to new fusion restaurants, are just amazing. If I have to be specific, I'll suggest to check out my page and hunt down the places that are decades old in New Road and Basantapur area.

What are the best foods in Kathmandu, and where are they found?

I love almost everything in Kathmandu. There is no such specific food that is my top favorite. As my name itself is "Mr.foodie", it all depends upon the mood. For example, if I’m eating in Patan area right now, a moment later, I might crave for something which is only available in Thamel.

Foodnommics

Why and when did you start blogging?

It’s my passion for food and food photography that have inspired me to start Foodnommics. I started my blog in August 2016.

What is it that you most love about blogging?

I think going to restaurants, learning the culture behind the food and experiencing it firsthand has to be the best reason for blogging. I love the interaction with people having different views on food, and to learn about it from the closest possible angle.

Your recommendation for the best place to have food.

I would say “The Old House Restaurant” has to be the best place to have food. They do make sure that we have a good portion of meal, with each and every flavor at its best. I highly recommend this place for the delicious food, amazing culinary presentation, and their chic yet peaceful ambiance both indoor and outdoor.

What are the best foods in Kathmandu, and where are they found?

I find the local foods to be the best. To be particular, barbeques at local places are awesome. You can get sekuwas in many nook and corners of town, made in their own way, but the one I love to devour is located just opposite to Nepal Oil Corporation, Sinamangal. The name of this local eatery is “Rooftop Bangur Tatha Buff Sekuwa Corner”. The barbecued meat is soft, tender, and juicy, and it has that sizzle and melts, too. Homemade spicy chili pickle, mula ko achar, salad in Julienne cut, and dalmot and bhuja are served alongside to accompany these perfectly marinated smokey barbecues. What else can one need, especially with a price that isn’t heavy for the pocket?

Foodie Sisters Nepal

Run by four sisters (three related by blood, and one, by heart), it has become a platform for twenty-two thousand people to interact and share their experiences. Currently, they are doing bachelors in fields not related to food, and food is something that brings them together after their hectic schedules.

Why and when did you start food blogging?

We started our food page almost one and half years ago. It was just a random idea we had while we were having a sleepover at one of our sisters’ place. Coming from a family of avid food lovers, we basically grew up trying and exploring different kind of foods. When we sisters hung out together, we always hopped from one restaurant to another, but always had trouble deciding what to order. Hence, we decided to turn our sisters’ private Instagram page to a public food blog.

What is it that you most love about blogging?

Being foodies by heart, the best thing about food blogging is getting the chance to explore new restaurants and trying out new food from different places. One of the best feelings is when our followers ask us for recommendations to celebrate their big days and send us pictures, it really makes us feel like we were a part of their celebration.

Your recommendation for the best places to have food.

This is something that is almost impossible to answer. But, if we had to pick some restaurants, they’ll be: Bricks Café, Kupondole, and Charlotte Café, Kumaripati, for amazing pizzas, Villa Everest, Thamel, for Korean, Gangnam Galbi, Naxal, for amazing Korean BBQ, Faalcha, Basantapur, for their bacon burgers, Newa Suhlee, Harisiddhi, for amazing variations in Newari cuisine, grilled to perfection chicken legs at Chi-Chi Grill, Saugal, and mushroom choela hidden in the alley of Indrachowk.

What are the best foods in Kathmandu, and where are they found?

As locals of Kathmandu, surprisingly, the hidden alleys and interlinking chowks of Kathmandu have always been a surprise to us. The small and humble hidden local eateries can sometimes offer foods that can take your breath away. So, we’d like to say that there are many restaurants in Kathmandu serving amazing food, but if you wish to understand Kathmandu, put on your comfy shoes and go explore the small places with an open mind, and you may just find the best food.

My Darling Food

Why and when did you start food blogging?

It was almost two years ago when my personal Instagram was filled with pictures of food. I used to post about food, and people used to ask me about it. Then, I started reviewing it, and it officially started.

What is it that you most love about blogging?

In my opinion, the best thing about blogging is the freedom to say anything. I can write what I know and what I experienced. There is no specific condition that I have to fulfill. The appreciation that I get is just the luxury of what I love doing.

Your recommendation for the best place to have food.

I'll recommend the pizza at Sal's Pizza.

What is the best food in Kathmandu, and where is it found?

I’ll try not to be biased, but as a Newar, it's hard to deny that Kathmandu has the best restaurants to have Newari dishes. Harisiddhi Newa Sushee is my favorite. The dishes there are my favorite, and I can be away from all the hustle of the city and be in tranquility.
