Pizza & Health
Pizza. No description needed. A universal food item that has become a global culture, but one that has been put in the category of fast foods and deemed as “unhealthy”. And, this is a topic of debate that has been going back and forth. What do you think? Fr!day believes that pizza is a healthy meal, but why? Here’s our view.
How does pizza and health go together?
Think of it; what goes on a pizza? Well, lots of things. But among the many ingredients are those veggies, tomatoes, olives, onions, peppers, etc. Normally, if those things were served on a plate in our daily meals, we wouldn’t really look at them, would we? But, on a pizza, we’ll eat them all. And, if we dive into the nutritional facts of all those ingredients, it can go on and on. So, here, we list down some of the interesting health facts and benefits that pizza offers:
1. Pizza helps prevent cancer
This must be one of the most widely heard facts, and it is somewhat true! The pizza sauce, whose main ingredient is tomatoes, contains lycopene. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a major antioxidant that has been shown to prevent various types of cancers, and if eaten once a week, it can even help reduce the chances of getting stomach, colon, mouth, prostate, esophageal, and lung cancer.
2. Increases your calcium intake
You know that calcium is essential for your body, right? Well, that’s another reason to eat more pizza! It’s a good way to increase your calcium intake. Cheese is one of the best sources of calcium, as is the tomato sauce on the pizza. Top your pizza with spinach, artichoke, broccoli, or the likes, and you can increase your calcium intake even more. Imagine helping your bones, vessels, and muscles function properly.
3. Boosts immunity
Yes, we’ve been talking about tomatoes and tomato sauce on pizza a lot, but there’s a lot of those on pizza. And also, other elements combined with tomatoes have a lot of vitamin C, which can boost your immunity. Not getting sick is yet another excuse for stuffing on pizza, and what an excuse that is!
4. Pizza is the ideal balanced diet
Since pizza contains everything, well, almost everything, from meat to dairy to vegetables and whole grains, it is a balanced diet. Imagine getting all the necessary nutrients—carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, etc. from a single meal…and a delicious one, too! A slice of pizza really does seem to do you wonders, doesn’t it? And, the best part is you can eat pizza anytime you want!
What you many not want to do…
Yes, pizza is a healthy meal, but it is only as healthy as you make it. Dump a load of cheese on it without much veggies, or just stack it full of the meaty pepperonis and toppings, then, you’ll get something even more delicious, but also, the kind of meal that gets in the category of fast and junk foods.
If you do want to keep having excuses to eat more pizza, then try to keep them as balanced as possible—healthy and tasty! Have a pizza, everyone…
