One Word Presents Oleanna
One World Theatre's premiere production, Oleanna, opened to mixed reviews on 2 December. Directed by Deborah Merola and produced by Mita Hosali, the David Mamet play examines the issues of sexual
harassment and political correctness in the backdrop of the education system in the United States. Carol,a university student with constantly failing grades-
played by Shanti Giri, Namrata Shrestha, and Diya Maskey-constantly engages with her professor - played
by Anup Baral -in a bid to better her performance. The engagement extends well beyond academics and teeters on the brink of a violently physical one. As
the scenes progress, the meek Carol emboldens and
climactically admits complaining against the professor's
motive of taking undue advantage of her. The play ends with the now vengeful Carol being physically attacked
by the professor, perhaps because he's already lost
his tenure and doesn't see a point in being politically correct any longer.
One World Theatre is a consortium of English theatre
groups in Kathmandu. The consortium is producing several other plays in the year to come-all in the
English language.
