Dashain, celebrated by Nepalis all over the world, is a time to relax, take a break from everything that you do and just spend quality time with your friends and family. Kathmandu city becomes like a ghost town with near-empty streets. There are certain activities that are popular during Dashain, such as visiting temples, playing cards, flying kites etc. But what if you’re looking for something different to do while spending time with family during Dashain? FR!DAY has made that easier for you by recommending some places that you may enjoy visiting during this festival season.
Garden of Dreams
Located in the heart of the city, Thamel, Garden of Dreams is a hangout spot for people of all ages. The garden is filled with young and old alike enjoying their day, chilling in the garden, gossiping and just having a good time. A perfect place to take your family during Dashain, Garden of Dreams has a lot to offer: a restaurant, a party and gathering space if you have a large group of people, a quaint garden filled with pavilions, fountains and much more. A fun fact about Garden of Dreams is that there are six pavilions which were designed to represent the six season of Nepal. As a fun and relaxing place which usually draws hundreds of visitors each day, during Dashain it should be much emptier, so that you can thoroughly enjoy your day there, observing the architectural magnificence and fresh green area with your loved ones.
Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square
Dashain is the time to beat the crowds at all of the Durbar Squares of the city. Though the squares do have certain celebration going on during Dashain, the number of people roaming is much lower than normal. You can roam the square at your own pace and maybe see things you’d normally not see during other times. And if you want to celebrate the festival with your family or friends, during Pulpati, Maha Astami, and Maha Navami, there are various celebrations and rituals being conducted in and around Hanuman Dhoka, located inside Kathmandu Durbar Square. A place to visit and pass down our culture to the younger generation, this is a perfect place to visit both for cultural awakening as well as lazing around.
Hiking in Shivapuri
Dashain for many is the time to laze around and sit in the house doing absolutely nothing. But for those adventurous and active souls out there, a perfect hike is refreshing and stimulating. This next activity is for everyone who wishes to stretch their legs during Dashain. A short hike to Shivapuri will not only elevate your mental state but also make you feel accomplished physically. And let’s be honest, it’s a good way to burn all the calories from the meat we eat during Dashain! The hike is suitable for beginners and a perfect family bonding exercise that is sure to strengthen your relationships, and the view from the top is spectacular. Two birds with one stone! But we do advise you carry some salt and wear full pants since there will be lots of leeches on the hike.
